The Failure of Secular Zionism

Jonathan Mark, in an article in the Jewish Week, presents us with a very troubling statistic:
Old-school Zionists like David Ben-Gurion and Chaim Nachman Bialik used to say that when there’d be criminals on the streets of a Jewish state it would prove that Zionism succeeded —we’d be normal, a state like any other.

If that’s the criteria, Zionism has succeeded. Statistics released this summer showed Israel’s murder rate shot up to fourth place among Western nations, with more Jews murdered by other Jews than by Palestinians.

So, here we are, 57 years after the establishment of the State of Israel and not only do Jews expel other Jews in Israel, but they murder each other, as well.

If this does not call out for a complete overhaul of the entire education system, as well as societal values within Israel, then I don't know what does.

We must decide once and for all, is Israel meant to be just another country in the world, a country with no vision, no values, misguided and troubled youth, full of those who only seek personal gain - even at the expense of others... Or, are we to be a Jewish State, a society built upon the principles and heritage of Judaism, a country with a vision and direction, where members of the society are proud of who they are, where they come from, and are willing to sacrifice for the greater good?

The writing is on the wall... is there anyone out there who cares enough to read it?
